Prosecutor General (PG) Hussain Shameem has revealed a request has been submitted to the court to seize a Rolex watch and luxury apartment which is believed to have been acquired unlawfully.
In a tweet, PG Shameem said the state has been working on seizing the illegitimate wealth acquired by individuals involved in crimes such as corruption and money laundering. As such, Shameem revealed the PG Office had requested over USD 4.5 million to be seized to the state last year, in relation to 26 cases of money laundering. In addition, he said the state has also requested to seize a Rolex watch and a luxury apartment which is believed to have been acquired unlawfully.
Although Shameem did not disclose who the items belong to, it is believed that he was referring to former Parliamentarian Ahmed Nihan Hussain Manik, who is facing charges in court in relation to these items. Nihan is charged with accepting a Rolex watch as a bribe by former Vice President Ahmed Adeeb in return for votes in the parliament in 2014 for the appointment of a PG and JSC member.
