Speaker calls for urgent action with respect to May 6 inquiry report

Speaker of Parliament Mohamed Nasheed has called for urgent action with regards to the issues highlighted in the May 6 inquiry report by the Parliamentary Committee on National Security Services.

The parliamentary committee has prepared a 242-page inquiry report on the security breaches that led to the terrorist attack against Speaker Nasheed on May 6. The report consists of detailed information on the night of the May 6 terrorist attack including the injuries the speaker sustained and his subsequent medical treatment, as well as the response of the national security services and the intelligence the committee had gathered. The committee also made 45 proposals in the report, including providing 24-hour security at Nasheed's residence, penalising officials that had been negligent in their duties to safeguard Nasheed, and conducting an yearly performance review on Nasheed's security team.

Speaking at the virtual ceremony held to officially present the inquiry report to him, Speaker Nasheed said this was one of the most important works undertaken by the Parliament of the Maldives. The speaker expressed hope that relevant action will be taken with regards to the points highlighted in the report, noting failure to take urgent action would lead to further danger to the whole country. As such, he noted the May 6 attack was not just an attack on him, but the economy and the livelihood of the country as well. Therefore, he said failure to resolve the issues highlighted in the report would be a loss for the whole country.

The May 6 inquiry report by the Parliamentary Committee on National Security Services has been presented to the leaders of the three branches of the state; President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, Speaker Mohamed Nasheed and Chief Justice Ahmed Mu’thasim Adnan. President Solih and Chief Justice Mu’thasim were also presented the reports on July 11.
