President congratulates Jeehan for winning a seat from IPU committee

President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih congratulates Parliamentarian Jeehan Mahmood for winning a seat in the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) Committee on Democracy and Human Rights.

In a tweet, President Solih congratulated Jeehen on her election to the IPU committee and said he has no doubt that she would help bolster the committee's efforts to address challenges to both democratic consolidation and the global human rights regime.

Jeehan is the first Maldivian to become a member of a committee of the IPU, which is the global organisation of national parliaments tasked with empowering parliaments and parliamentarians to promote peace, democracy, and sustainable development.

The IPU Committee on Democracy and Human Rights is one of the most crucial permanent committees in the union. The committee examines current and developing challenges to democracy and human rights and proposes parliamentary action on these examinations at both national and international levels through the political resolutions it sets out once a year, which is adopted by the entire IPU membership.

Parliamentarian Jeehan is also the Chairperson of the Committee on Human Rights and Gender in the Parliament of the Maldives.

The Government of the Maldives has been expanding the country's role in the international community. As such, High Commissioner of the Maldives to the United Kingdom and Ambassador of the Maldives to France and Ireland Dr. Farahanaz Faisal was appointed as the President of Women in Diplomacy Network.

Furthermore, Minister of Foreign Affairs Abdulla Shahid was elected as the president of the 76th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA).
