Minister of Defence Mariya Ahmed Didi has met with Abbas Faiz, the Special Envoy appointed by President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih for the investigation of the terrorist attack against Speaker of Parliament Mohamed Nasheed on May 6.
After the meeting, Minister Mariya said Abbas Faiz has been a steadfast friend of the Maldives in its democratic struggle and that he had supported former President Mohamed Nasheed and other democracy activists during the Maldives political crisis in 2012.
Since arriving in the Maldives on July 2, Abbas Faiz has met with members of the Parliamentary Committee on National Security Services, Deputy Speaker Eva Abdulla, and Attorney General Ibrahim Riffath. The president's decision to appoint a special envoy for the May 6 attack probe was announced on May 19.
As per the directive issued by the President's Office, the special envoy is mandated to ensure that all stages of the investigation, prosecution, and trial of the alleged perpetrators, and any related and necessary inquiries, comply with international best practice and national laws to ensure public confidence in the integrity of these processes. The oversight of the investigation by the special envoy will be conducted within the parameters set by the Prosecutor General's Office, stated the President's Office.
