Clemency Board records high number of resolved cases this year

The Clemency Board has announced it has resolved over 400 cases in the last six months, which is more than the total number of cases regarding clemency resolved in the previous 11 years.

The Clemency Board was formed by President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih to prescribe the procedure concerning clemency of individuals convicted of criminal offences with reference to Article 115 of the Constitution of Maldives. The Clemency Board generally handles written requests regarding clemency of individuals.

The statistics from the Clemency Board shows it has resolved 429 cases as of June this year, which is an increase of 250% compared to the previous 11 years. The statistics also show the Clemency Board had also resolved the 637 cases of appeal.

Furthermore, the Clemency Board received 144 cases this year and currently has 105 unresolved cases. Additionally, the board stated it has not recorded a single session which had to be cancelled due to lack of quorum.

The Clemency Board is chaired by the Attorney General Ibrahim Riffath and the administrative support for the board is provided by the administrative division of Attorney General's Office.
