Digital textbooks to be provided for students in grade 9 and above

Ministry of Education has announced it will provide digital textbooks to school students in Grade 9 and above for the new academic year.

The education ministry stated that school students will be able to use tablets to read educational content in the new academic year, which is set to begin on August 10. The ministry stated that digital textbooks would make it easier for students since they would be free from the burden of carrying heavy textbooks.

State Minister of Education Dr. Abdulla Rasheed said students studying for the Cambridge O'Level examinations will be given a Cambridge login to obtain their digital textbooks, adding physical textbooks will still be available at the school libraries. The ministry has stated around 50 schools are teaching students using digital textbooks since the launch of the pilot project of digitalising textbooks in 2020. The ministry stated its aim is to expand and improve educational resources in order to raise the standard of education for students.

Furthermore, the education ministry has stated over 70,000 tablets will be distributed to teachers and students under the school digitalisation programme. The ministry has also provided high-speed internet in all the schools and established a special mechanism to monitor the usage of the Wi-Fi networks in schools.

Additionally, schools have introduced digital libraries and switched to digital report forms as well.
