The Permanent Representative of the Maldives to the International Maritime Organization (IMO), Dr. Farahanaz Faizal, has presented her Letter of Credence to the Secretary-General of the IMO, Kitack Lim.
The credentials were presented in an official ceremony held at the headquarters of IMO on July 6. At the ceremony, High Commissioner Dr. Farahanaz Faizal thanked Secretary-General Kitack Lim for the warm welcome, and conveyed compliments from President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih. She reiterated the Maldives’ commitment towards closer engagement with the IMO in a number of areas, including the safe, fair and effective regulating of shipping as well as the reduction of pollution from ships, in line with internationally agreed regulations and standards.
President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih appointed High Commissioner Dr. Farahanaz Faizal as the Permanent Representative of the Maldives to the International Maritime Organization on April 5, 2021, following approval by the Parliament of the Maldives on March 2, 2021. High Commissioner Dr. Farahanaz Faizal is the first Permanent Representative of the Maldives to be accredited to the IMO since the Maldives became a member state of the organization in 1967.
Established on March 17, 1948, the IMO is a United Nations specialized agency, responsible for the safety and security of shipping and the prevention of marine and atmospheric pollution by ships. It aims to create a regulatory framework for the shipping industry that is fair and effective, universally adopted and universally implemented. At present, IMO has 174 member states and 3 associate members.
