Gov't distributes additional 1,500 tablets to students

Minister of Education Dr. Aishath Ali has announced the government has distributed an additional 1,500 tablets for school students. Minister Aishath made the statement at a panel discussion held on the education policies of the ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP).

At the panel discussion, a member of the audience raised concerns over students facing difficulties in attending online classes. Minister Aishath said tablets were initially distributed to students above the third grade due to the low number of tablets in stock.

The minister said the education ministry has distributed an additional 1,500 tablets and is working to obtain more devices. Students can continue their online lessons by using other devices such as computers and televisions, she also said.

The government has stated over 70,000 tablets will be distributed to teachers and students under the school digitalisation programme. Prior to the distribution of the tablets, the education ministry has provided high-speed internet in all the schools and has established a special mechanism to monitor the usage of the Wi-Fi networks in schools.
