Agro National Corporation Limited (AgroNat) has hosted a special forum to provide information to farmers.
The first session of the virtual forum was held for farmers in Haa Alifu Atoll. As such, members of the Haa Alifu Atoll Council, island councillors, and members of the Women's Development Committee joined the first session of the forum.
The topics discussed at the forum included the contract farming programme conducted by AgroNat, the benefits of councils contributing to the work of farmers, and the various opportunities available in developing farming and agriculture in the Maldives. Furthermore, Managing Director of AgroNat Haroon Rasheed, Deputy Managing Director Ahmed Mohamed Fulhu, and other senior officials provided information at the forum.
Farmers from 45 islands have begun the fieldwork under the first phase of the contract farming project. AgroNat stated around 1,500 farmers have expressed interest in the contract farming project, and that it has established contracts with 400 farmers and is in the negotiating stage with 684 farmers.
AgroNat was established by the government to market agricultural produce from local farms and provide a better income for farmers by providing technical and financial assistance to local farmers and helping them to market their produce.
