Deputy Speaker meets Special Envoy appointed to May 6 probe

Deputy Speaker of Parliament Eva Abdulla has met with Abbas Faiz, the Special Envoy appointed by President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih to the investigation of the terrorist attack against Speaker of Parliament Mohamed Nasheed on May 6.

The meeting between the deputy speaker and the special envoy was held at the Secretariat of the Parliament of the Maldives. The meeting was held amid the ongoing parliamentary inquiry into the security breaches that led to the May 6 attack against Speaker Nasheed.

The president’s decision to appoint a special envoy to the May 6 attack probe was announced on May 19. As per the directive issued by the President’s Office, the special envoy is mandated to ensure that all stages of the investigation, prosecution and trial of the alleged perpetrators, and any related and necessary inquiries, comply with international best practice and national laws to ensure public confidence in the integrity of these processes. The President’s Office stated the oversight of the investigation by the special envoy will be conducted within the parameters set by the Prosecutor General.

Speaker Nasheed was severely injured after an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) was triggered near his residence in Male’, while he was getting into his car on the night of May 6. Maldives Police Service (MPS) has arrested five people in relation to the attack, including the individual who detonated the IED and the owner of the motorcycle to which the IED was attached.
