Speaker departs to the UK for further treatment

Speaker of Parliament Mohamed Nasheed has departed to the UK for further treatment for the injuries sustained in the terrorist attack near his residence in Male' on May 6.

Speaker Nasheed departed to the UK after completing treatment from Germany. Nasheed underwent a 16-hour operation at ADK Hospital in Male' after the attack, and was taken to Germany on May 13 for further treatment.

The ADK medical team that treated Nasheed stated he had sustained life-threatening injuries in the attack, which could have been fatal. The team of doctors stated the speaker had to undergo hours of surgery to extract shrapnel that were lodged inside his body, which had damaged his ribs and vital organs, and that one piece of shrapnel had been one centimeter away from his heart.

The speaker recently assured he is in good health, although he may still need to undergo additional surgery. Speaking on the social media application Clubhouse, Nasheed cited doctors as saying that there are currently no major issues regarding his internal organs. However, he said that the attack has injured his left ear, causing diminished hearing, adding the doctors have recommended surgery to fix the injury if it has not completely healed. He also said doctors have advised him to undergo a surgery to fix the numbness in the fingers on his right hand but added that he is reluctant to heed the advice.

Maldives Police Service (MPS) has arrested five suspects in relation to the attack on May 6. This includes the individual who allegedly detonated the Improvised Explosive Device (IED) and the owner of the motorcycle to which the device was attached.
