President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has stated this is the time for the whole nation to work together to find solutions for the deep problems faced by the country, rather than creating political instability and chaos.
Speaking at a press conference held on June 8, President Solih stated some people are trying to shift the focus of the investigation into the May 6 terrorist attack against Speaker of Parliament Mohamed Nasheed to a whole new direction by spreading different kinds of rumours. However, the president said this is not the time to spread baseless rumours and create chaos, as the country is facing a delicate situation where the individuals who funded and orchestrated the attack need to be found and brought to justice. He added the whole nation must work together to ensure there is no repeat of such an attack.
Speaking further, President Solih noted the remarkable success achieved by the ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) in the 2019 parliamentary elections by winning 65 seats was made possible by the hard work of many people, most notably Speaker Nasheed. The president noted this was an excellent opportunity provided by the public for the government and parliament to work together to address and resolve the major problems faced by the country. The president added his focus is solely on fulfilling the responsibilities entrusted in him by the public rather than playing political games.
Speaking on claims that the government is obstructing the parliamentary inquiry into the May 6 attack, President Solih assured that the government is not meddling with the inquiry at any level, as stated by the chair of the parliamentary committee carrying out the inquiry. He noted the chair of the committee has also acknowledged the support and cooperation provided by the government towards the inquiry. He added the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) is also cooperating with the parliamentary inquiry.
Claims that the government is interfering with the parliamentary inquiry into the May 6 attack surfaced after MNDF released a press statement stating individual officers cannot be summoned to a parliament committee and that MNDF will be answering to the committee as an institution rather than subjecting individual officers to the inquiry. Since the statement, several senior figures of MNDF, as well as Maldives Police Service (MPS) and other state institutions have been summoned to the committee for questioning.
