Parliament approves appointment of Shauna as Environment Minister

Parliament of the Maldives has approved the appointment of Aishath Shauna as the Minister of Environment, Climate Change and Technology.

The appointment of Shauna as the environment minister was approved with votes from 57 parliamentarians, while eight parliamentarians voted against and there was one abstention.

The Parliament aprroved the appointment after the Government Oversight Committee approved the nomination unanimously on May 26.
Minister Shauna was appointed to the newly-created Ministry of Environment, Climate Change and Technology on May 5.
She was previously employed as the Policy Secretary of the President's Office. The new ministry was created after dissolving the Ministry of Communications, Science and Technology. Following the dissolution of the Ministry of Communications, Science and Technology, the Ministry of Environment, Climate Change and Technology is mandated with undertaking the functions and responsibilities of the dissolved office. The staff would also be transferred to the Ministry of Environment, Climate Change and Technology.

In addition, as part of the changes brought to the cabinet on May 5, Dr. Hussain Rasheed Hassan, previously the Minister of Environment, was appointed as Minister of Fisheries, Marine Resources and Agriculture. He was appointed as the fisheries minister following the resignation of Zaha Waheed from the position. However, the parliamentary committee has not yet made a decision to approve his appointment.
