President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has congratulated Minister of Foreign Affairs Abdulla Shahid for winning the election for the presidency of the 76th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA).
In a tweet, President noted the election victory by a resounding 143 votes is a great honour for the Maldives. He expressed confidence that Minister Shahid will do the nation proud as the president of UNGA.
Meanwhile, Speaker of Parliament Mohamed Nasheed has also congratulated Minister Shahid on being elected as the next president of the UNGA. The speaker noted this is a great day for the Maldives, as well as small island states and climate vulnerable countries everywhere.
The president of the UNGA is a position voted for by UNGA representatives on a yearly basis. The president is the chair and presiding officer of the General Assembly. The presidency of the 76th session of UNGA was contested by Maldives and Afghanistan.
