Chief of Defence Force summoned for parliamentary inquiry into May 6 attack

Chief of Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) Major General Abdulla Shamaal has been summoned to the Parliamentary Committee on National Security Services for the inquiry into the terrorist attack against Speaker of Parliament Mohamed Nasheed on May 6.

The MNDF chief was summoned to the parliament committee for questioning on the security breaches during the May 6 attack against Speaker Nasheed. He is among the several senior figures who have been brought into questioning by the committee as part of its ongoing inquiry.

Meanwhile, Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) has released a press statement highlighting that the Minister of Defence is responsible for answering to the president and the parliament on matters concerning the work of the defence force. MNDF stated summoning military officers individually for questioning is against the chain-of-command hierarchy and the military's policies, since it is illegal to divulge military information to those outside the force.

In addition to the Chief of Defence Force, the Parliamentary Committee on National Security Services has also summoned Minister of National Planning, Housing and Infrastructure Mohamed Aslam, former Mayor of Male’ City Sifa Mohammed and the Director of Counter Terrorism, Superintendent of Police Fareed Ismail for questioning. PSM News has received information that senior five officials of Maldives Police Service are set to be summoned to the committee for questioning.
