Maldives Police Service (MPS) has identified a fifth person involved in the terrorist attack against Speaker of Parliament Mohamed Nasheed on May 6.
Speaking at a press conference held on June 6, Superintendent of Police Mohamed Basheer stated significant progress has been achieved in the investigation into the attack against the speaker. As such, the superintendent revealed one of the individuals arrested in an anti-terrorism operation conducted by MPS was found to have been involved in the May 6 attack. He added further investigation is currently ongoing with regards to the individual’s involvement in the attack.
MPS had previously arrested four people in relation to the May 6 attack, including the individual who allegedly detonated the Improvised Explosive Device (IED) and the owner of the motorcycle to which the IED was attached. Since the attack, MPS has also carried out multiple anti-terrorism operations across the country, arresting several people.
Speaker Nasheed underwent multiple life-saving surgeries on injuries to his head, chest, abdomen and limbs over the course of 16 hours at ADK Hospital in Male’, immediately after the attack near his residence. He is currently in Germany, recovering from his injuries.
