President's Office has revealed changes were brought to the Special Protection Group (SPG) following an order from President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih. The SPG is part of the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) and is tasked with providing security to senior state officials.
In a tweet, Spokesperson at the President's Office Mohamed Mabrook Azeez said the president ordered Minister of Defence Mariya Ahmed Didi to make some needed changes to the SPG to provide better security to senior state officials. The changes include the appointment of Lieutenant Colonel Muiz Mustafa as the commanding officer, Major Moosa Rameez as the deputy commanding officer, and Abdul Jameel as the first sergeant of the SPG.
The changes come at a time when a committee appointed by the president, consisting of members of the President's Office and the Attorney General's Office, is conducting an intelligence audit on the national security services over the terror attack on Speaker of Parliament Mohamed Nasheed on May 6.
Parliamentary Committee on National Security Services has also begun an investigation over a recent leak of information regarding the security provided for Speaker Nasheed.
