Parliamentary Committee on National Security Services has stated it will investigate the leak of information regarding the security provided for Speaker of Parliament Mohamed Nasheed.
In a press statement issued following an article published on a local news outlet, the parliamentary committee expressed concern over the detailed information the article provides regarding the security procedures, especially at Nasheed's residence. The committee stated that the information is only known to special personnel within the national security services and that leaking the information endangers the speaker and his family. The committee highlighted that leaking information from within the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) is a criminal act and that it was the responsibility of the committee to investigate the leak.
On May 6, Speaker Nasheed was severely injured after an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) was triggered near his residence. Nasheed underwent a 16-hour operation at ADK Hospital in Male' after the attack, and was taken to Germany on May 13 for further treatment and has since been discharged.
Maldives Police Service (MPS) has arrested four suspects over the attack, including the individual who allegedly detonated the IED and the owner of the motorcycle to which the IED was attached. Furthermore, a special committee consisting of members of the President's Office and the Attorney General's Office is conducting an intelligence audit on the national security services over the attack.
