Fewer people catching COVID-19 for the second time in the Maldives

Health Emergency Operations Centre (HEOC) has revealed fewer people have been catching COVID-19 for the second time this year.

At a press conference held by the HEOC, Dr. Ibrahim Afzal stated most of the people who caught COVID-19 twice were those who were infected nine months prior. The average person has a chance of getting re-infected after three months and re-infection rates were high in 2020, with a weekly average of 40 reported cases, said the doctor.

Afzal said it is not surprising to see re-infection after three months but re-infection rates have been significantly lower in 2021, with a weekly average of 5 reported cases. He said that 12 cases were reported in which individuals were infected the second time after three months and that most of the re-infection cases were of people who caught COVID-19 after nine months. He predicted that re-infection rates will become much lower as more people get vaccinated.

Showing the latest updates at the press conference, Dr. Afzal said most of the people who tested positive for COVID-19 are individuals between the ages of 18 and 45. He said 148 individuals between 18 and 45 years of age had caught COVID-19 twice and most of the hospitalised patients are also in that age range.
