Government to undertake further efforts to improve internet services in the Maldives

Minister of Environment, Climate Change and Technology Aminath Shauna has stated further efforts are underway to improve internet services in the Maldives, in addition to the reduced prices announced by the government.

Speaking at a programme aired on PSM News, Minister Shauna acknowledged that internet is a fundamental service in the modern world, noting internet services are crucial for the implementation of many of the government’s development policies, including decentralisation of services across the Maldives. The minister noted the reduced internet prices announced on May 27 was the start of a wider project to improve internet services and make it more affordable. She added President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has also initiated special efforts to train more youth in the industry and utilise their skills to improve internet services in the country.

Increasing the quality of internet services in the country and making the services affordable is a key pledge of President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih. As part of efforts to make internet services more affordable, the government has announced new internet service packages to reduce prices by 30%. The changes will be implemented on July 1 and is set to reduce the internet service prices for around 70% of the population.

The changes also include reducing the price of mobile data allowance by 20%, which will be implemented in October.
