Military capacity has grown significantly since the November 3 attacks: Defence Minister

Minister of Defence Mariya Ahmed Didi has stated the military capacity of the Maldives has grown significantly since the terrorist attacks on November 3, 1988.

In a message released on the occasion of Victory Day, Defence Minister Mariya said the Maldivian military had very limited resources and training when armed militants attacked the country in 1988. However, she noted the courageous efforts of Maldivian armed forces 32 years ago despite the limitations helped to foil the attack on national independence and sovereignty. As such, she applauded the sacrifice made by Corporal Hussain Adam and other officers who were martyred while defending the nation from an unprecedented attack.

The defence minister stated the capacity of the Maldivian military has grown significantly since the attacks, in terms of resources and training. She noted the current administration places a high priority on increasing the capacity of the military, adding the administration will continue facilitating additional resources for Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF).

In her message, Defence Minister Mariya expressed grief over the 19 lives lost during the November 3 attacks. She also acknowledged and appreciated the assistance received by the Indian government in foiling the attack and bringing the perpetrators to justice.
