Maldives Police Service (MPS) has revealed over 500 people have been fined for breaching the vehicle curfew imposed in the Greater Male’ Region.
On August 22, Health Protection Agency (HPA) imposed a vehicle ban from 2000hrs to 0500hrs in Male’, Hulhumale’ and Villimale’, as part of efforts to limit social movement and mitigate the spread of COVID-19. A warning is issued for the first violation of the curfew, while a second violation will lead to a fine of USD 65.
MPS stated 550 people were fined for breaching the vehicle curfew between August 22 and September 4. MPS revealed a further 1,143 people were issued warnings.
MPS has increased monitoring of compliance to HPA guidelines in the Greater Male’ Region in recent weeks, due to a second surge of COVID-19 cases in the capital. In this regard, fines are handed out to individuals who do not wear masks in public, and individuals who breach the movement restrictions imposed to reduce the spread of COVID-19.
In addition to a vehicle curfew from 2000hrs to 0500hrs, a total curfew is imposed from 2200hrs to 0500hrs in Male’, Hulhumale’ and Villimale’. Furthermore, gatherings of more than 5 people are prohibited at all times.
Any violations of the guidelines will result in a fine of USD 65.
