Parliament approves appointment of Mausoom as Tourism Minister

The Parliament of the Maldives has approved the appointment of Dr. Abdulla Mausoom as Minister of Tourism.

The appointment of Mausoom as Tourism Minister was approved by the parliament with votes from all 69 parliamentarians present at the sitting on September 6.

Mausoom was appointed as Tourism Minister on August 6 to replace Ali Waheed, who who was removed from the position on July 9 amid serious allegations of sexual harassment. The Parliament Committee on Government Oversight had initially approved the appointment of Mausoom on August 20. However, the appointment was sent back for committee review after parliamentarians raised questions over the legitimacy of his oath.

During the review of the committee report in the parliament floor, some parliamentarians raised questions over the legitimacy of the appointment as Mausoom had not resigned from his position as a managing director of a private company when he took his oath on August 6, although he later resigned from the company. The tourism minister retook his oath following the counsel of the parliament committee on the matter, after which his appointment was re-approved by the committee on September 2.
