President of the Elections Commission of the Maldives (ECM) Ahmed Shareef has called on all political parties to promote peace and stability instead of inciting violence and hatred.
The elections commissioner made the remarks in a tweet posted in relation to an individual calling for physical harm on President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih in a programme aired by a local TV channel. In his tweet, Shareef said political parties must not encourage violence and hatred during these delicate times. He called on all political parties to promote peace and stability in the nation.
Meanwhile, Maldives Police Service (MPS) has announced an investigation has been launched into the incident where a caller made threatening remarks towards the president in a televised programme. The incident is also under investigation by Maldives Broadcasting Commission (BroadCom).
