Maldives Correctional Service (MCS) has formulated the disciplinary standards and regulations of prison inmates and detainees.
The regulations were formulated in reference to Clause 97 of the Prisons and Parole Act, and within the authorities provided to MCS under Clause 150 of the Act. The regulations aim to provide the disciplinary standards to be maintained by inmates and to clarify all acts which are prohibited in prison.
As per the regulations, all Muslim inmates are required to observe the five daily prayers, recite Quran and fulfill all other religious duties on time. The regulations also require all inmates to maintain personal hygiene by showering and brushing their teeth at least twice a day. The regulations also provide the standards to be maintained in terms of shaving, haircuts and other matters related to personal hygiene.
Furthermore, the regulation specifies 38 acts prohibited for inmates in prisons. This includes refusal to take part in any rehabilitation programme, refusal to let prison officers inspect their cells and shouting or acting violent inside the cells.
Inmates are also prohibited from inflicting self-harm, disobeying the orders of a prison officer and entering any unauthorised areas of the prison. Furthermore, they are also prohibited from initiating or taking part in any strikes in prison.
