Ministry of Education has decided to extend the closure of schools in Greater Male’ region for additional two weeks due to the continued spread of COVID-19 in the capital.
Schools in Male’ were originally scheduled to reopen next week, having been closed for the past two weeks due to a second wave of COVID-19 in the capital. However, education ministry has decided to keep schools in the Greater Male’ Region closed for an additional two weeks in light of the COVID-19 situation in the capital.
The ministry said the decision was made upon consultation with Health Protection Agency (HPA). The ministry stated the decision will be revised at the end of the two-week period, depending on how the COVID-19 situation develops. The ministry further noted lessons will be conducted online during the next two weeks, although students of grades 11 and 12 will continue to attend the classes to prepare for their exams.
On July 1, the administration decided to reopen schools in islands without active COVID-19 cases after keeping it closed for over three months. Students of Grades 9 to 12 in Male' City also commenced studies on July 1 and the administration planned to resume classes for grades 7 to 8 by mid-August. However, due to the increase in COVID-19 cases, the education ministry closed the schools again.
