Government permits split stays for tourists

The government has formulated a guideline to allow tourists to stay in more than one resort.

The tourism ministry said the decision was made to encourage tourists to stay in the country longer, and to allow them to experience more than one resort. The ministry said the decision was made after obtaining approval from Health Emergency Operation Centre (HEOC) and Health Protection Agency (HPA).

Split stays will be permitted to resorts that meet compulsory requirements of the ministry after a request is made by the resort. As per the guidelines, requests should be made two days prior to the date of travel.

The guideline states tourists can only travel to resorts with no active cases of COVID-19 and if a resort has had an active case, tourists will only be permitted after HPA approvals. The guideline further states tourists will be permitted travel from one resort to another after an exit health screening and that only asymptomatic tourists will be permitted to travel.

After the Maldives reopened its borders to tourists on July 15, the government only allowed tourists to stay in only one resort. Even with the reintroduction of the split stays, the visitors will not be able to travel from a resort to yachts or safaris.
