Psychological support provided to 2,600 people amid COVID-19 pandemic: MRC

Maldives Red Crescent (MRC) has revealed 2,600 people have been provided psychological support amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

Speaking at a press conference held at Health Emergency Operation Centre (HEOC), Secretary General of MRC Fathimath Himya shared details of the psychological support programme conducted by MRC in association with Centre for Mental Health (CMH). Himya said over 2,600 people were provided psychological support amid the COVID-19 pandemic, across 900 phone calls to the mental health hotline 1425 and 44 group sessions. She said most of the individuals who sought psychological support were aged between 18 and 35.

Himya also shared details of the efforts undertaken to train school teachers to provide psychological support for students. In this regard, she said Psychological Support Service (PSS) training was provided to 249 individuals, while a further 6,300 individuals were trained on Psychological First Aid (PFA).

The secretary general also shared details of further projects carried out by MRC amid the COVID-19 pandemic. As such, Himya noted MRC had provided 148,000 meal packs for expatriates in need of assistance, in addition to 1,500 emergency meal packs and 1,700 hygiene packs. She added MRC had provided assistance for 9,800 expatriates amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

Furthermore, Himya revealed over 400 establishments were inspected by MRC as part of the mass public health inspection carried out in the Greater Male’ Region to monitor compliance to the guidelines of Health Protection Agency (HPA).
