LGA blocks no-confidence vote against Male' City Mayor

Local Government Authority (LGA) has blocked the no confidence vote against Male’ City Mayor Sifa Mohamed, citing an ongoing inquiry by LGA.

In a letter signed by the CEO of LGA Fathimath Afshan Latheef, the authority said an inquiry has been launched into the no-confidence motion initiated by a member of Male' City Council against Mayor Sifa Mohamed. LGA stated the no-confidence vote has been blocked until the end of the inquiry.

Speaking to PSM News, Mayor Sifa said the no-confidence vote is baseless and that the vote has been politicised in an attempt to remove her from the post. She said the no-confidence motion is an attempt by Councilor Mohamed Fazeen to show the council has failed after it has run several successful projects.

The mayor further said the council had run several projects for the benefit of the people of Male' city despite the various challenges it faced. She said she expects all members of the ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) to support her in the no-confidence vote against her.
