Maldives Police Services (MPS) has stated action will be taken against individuals who violated Health Protection Agency (HPA) guidelines in the rally held by the opposition coalition of Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) and People's National Congress (PNC).
The opposition coalition held protests on August 28 in which several individuals disregarded HPA guidelines, despite the number of COVID-19 cases increasing in the Maldives over the past few weeks. During the protest, several individuals went against the advice of wearing face masks and measures of social distancing. HPA had also advised against crowds of more than 5 in an effort to curb the spread of the virus.
The rally also goes against the guidelines published by the Ministry of Home Affairs in July this year asking parties to hold political rallies only in Carnival area unless otherwise permitted.
