Over 1,800 people fined for violating HPA guidelines

Health Emergency Operations Centre (HEOC) has revealed over 1,800 individuals have been fined for violating the guidelines published by the Health Protection Agency (HPA).

Speaking at a news conference held at the HEOC, Epidemiologist of Health Protection Agency (HPA), Dr. Ibrahim Afzal said a total of 41 individuals were fined and 21 individuals were cautioned during the past 24 hours. Dr. Afzal said a total of 1,884 people have been fined this month thus far, with an additional 2,444 people getting a caution from the police.

HPA has revised its guidelines following a surge of COVID-19 cases in the country. In this regard, a curfew has been set in the Greater Male’ Region from 2200hrs until 0500hrs, while wearing masks in public has been made mandatory. In addition, a vehicle ban has now been introduced from 2000hrs to 0500hrs.

Maldives Police Service has increased monitoring of compliance to HPA guidelines in order to control the spread of COVID-19. Individuals who violate the guidelines on multiple occasions are fined USD 65.
