Male' City Council has decided to grant Mayor Sifa Mohamed a duration of 10 days to respond to the no-confidence motion raised against her.
Councillor Mohamed Fazeen raised the motion against the mayor, citing misconduct in running the council in accordance to the Decentralisation Act. At the meeting, 9 councilors of the total 13 members of the council voted in favour of the motion and decided to grant her 10 days to response.
A no-confidence motion against Mayor Sifa had been raised before. However, the motion was not scheduled by the secretariat, after which the matter was taken to the Local Government Authority (LGA).
Speaking to PSM News, Mayor Sifa refuted the allegations against her and said she was able to complete a successful three-year term for the people of the capital despite the very challenging working environment. She also expected the ruling party, Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) councilors to defend her. She said the move was political and assured a response in 10 days.
