Schools in the Greater Male’ Region have been closed for another two weeks, due to the continued spread of COVID-19 in the capital.
Schools in Male’ were originally scheduled to be reopen next week, having been closed for the past two weeks due to a second wave of COVID-19 in the capital. However, Ministry of Education has decided to keep schools in the Greater Male’ Region closed for an additional two weeks in light of the COVID-19 situation in the capital. The ministry said the decision was made upon consultation with Health Protection Agency (HPA).
Ministry of Education stated lessons will be conducted online during the next two weeks. The ministry added the decision to close schools will be revised at the end of the two-week period, depending on how the COVID-19 situation develops.
On July 1, the administration decided to reopen schools in islands without active COVID-19 cases after keeping it closed for over three months. Students of Grades 9 to 12 in Male' City also commenced studies on July 1 and the administration planned to resume classes for grades 7 to 8 by mid-August. However, the recent few weeks have seen a significant increase of COVID-19 cases in the country.
