UN75 Campaign launched in the Maldives

United Nations (UN) in the Maldives has officially launched the activities of the global campaign to mark the 75th anniversary of the UN.

The activities of the UN75 campaign was launched in the Maldives during a virtual event initiated by the UN Resident Coordinator Catherine Haswell. The virtual event was also attended by First Lady Fazna Ahmed, ministers of the cabinet, ambassadors and diplomats as well as senior officials of government institutions and other partner organisations.

During the virtual event, UN Resident Coordinator Catherine Haswell called on all partners and Maldivians to join the UN75 Dialogue and ensure that the Maldives is represented in the global discussions. She emphasised the importance of countries working together in a positive spirit of multilateralism to tackle global challenges and preserve development gains for all.

Speaking at the event, Minister of Foreign Affairs Abdulla Shahid reaffirmed the commitment of the Maldives to the principles of the UN and reiterated the support of the government to the UN75 dialogues. He expressed belief the UN75 initiatives will help the Maldives to narrow gaps and build back better after the COVID-19 pandemic, with stronger policies.

In a press statement released following the event, UN Maldives stated the organisation is marking this milestone at a time of great upheaval around the world due to the COVID-19 pandemic. UN expressed hope the UN75 campaign will collectively bring people together across borders, sectors and generations to join the dialogue to address global challenges.

With a special emphasis on participation of the youth and the most vulnerable, the UN75 campaign aims to encourage open discussions about issues such as pandemics, the climate crisis and reducing inequalities to help the Maldives to recover better. The campaign will include a series of events throughout 2020.
