School sessions to be shortened starting from August 23

Ministry of Education has announced schools will be operating shorter sessions starting from August 23.

In a circular sent to all schools, the education ministry announced the decision to shorten the school sessions to a maximum of 4 hours, with a maximum of 35 minutes allocated for each subject period. The ministry has instructed schools to conduct online lessons to cover the syllabus if it cannot be done within the school session.


On July 1, the administration decided to reopen schools in islands without active COVID-19 cases after keeping it closed for over three months. Students of Grades 9 to 12 in Male' City also commenced studies on July 1. However, due to a second surge of COVID-19 cases in Male’, schools in the capital were closed again until August 19.

Despite the closure of schools, teleclasses and online classes are ongoing to ensure continued learning for students.
