President expresses confidence in Economic Minister

President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has expressed support for Minister of Economic Development Fayyaz Ismail amid the no-confidence motion initiated against him at the Parliament of the Maldives.

In an interview given to a local media outlet, President Solih said he does not believe Economic Minister Fayyaz has done anything to warrant a no-confidence motion against him. The president highlighted the economic minister’s contributions in fulfilling major electoral pledges of the government, adding Fayyaz is one the most hard working ministers of the cabinet.

President Solih expressed his confidence and support for the economic minister after parliamentarians from the main ruling party, Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), initiated a no-confidence motion against him last week. Speaker of Parliament Mohamed Nasheed was the first to sign the no-confidence motion, which reportedly has gained 22 signatures.

Parliamentarians who want to dismiss the minister have not revealed the reason behind submitting the motion. Meanwhile, several other parliamentarians have publicly declared their support for Fayyaz, highlighting his hard work and achievements as the economic minister.
