Minister of Economic Development Fayyaz Ismail has stated he is surprised at the decision of some parliamentarians of the ruling party to launch a no-confidence motion against him, as he has not done anything to warrant a loss of confidence.
Speaking to PSM News, Minister Fayyaz said the move within the party is unexpected as no grievances had come his way. Stating that he has been performing his duties well, he assured he remains steadfast in serving the country.
Minister Fayyaz said the positive from this is that it shows the strengthening of democracy in the Maldives, as elected parliamentarians from the ruling party could submit a motion against their own cabinet. However, Fayyaz said he feels disappointed as no grievances about him was raised before the attempt to sign the no-confidence motion. He said the public will be the judge as he continues to fulfill the promises of the government refraining from any corrupt activity.
A parliamentarian working in favour of dismissing Minister Fayyaz said over 20 members now have signed the no-confidence motion including Speaker Mohamed Nasheed. Parliamentarians who want to dismiss the minister have not revealed the reason behind submitting the motion.
Meanwhile, several other parliamentarians have publicly declared their support for Fayyaz, highlighting his hard work and achievements as the economic minister.
