Chief Magistrate of Haa Dhaalu Judicial Constituency, Mohamed Mausoom, has resigned from his position amid the dismissal motion launched against him by the Judicial Service Commission (JSC).
JSC forwarded the dismissal motion against Mausoom to the Parliament of the Maldives after investigating allegations of corruption and sexual harassment raised against him. After reviewing the motion, the Parliamentary Committee on Judiciary had decided to move forward with the dismissal. However, Mausoom submitted his resignation before the committee report was submitted to the parliament floor.
JSC revealed Chief Magistrate Mausoom was found guilty of multiple allegations of corruption and sexual harassment raised against him. As such, JSC stated Mausoom had taken bribes for several rulings issued by magistrate courts in the constituency, as proven by the large sums of unaccounted money deposited to his bank account. JSC also revealed Mausoom had sexually harassed a court employee and used inappropriate language when speaking with an employee.
Following the completion of the investigation, JSC declared Mausoom had violated the Clause 32 of the Judges’ Act as well as the Code of Conduct for Judges.
