Noting the thoughts and prayers are with the victims, their families and all affected by the terrible tragedy, President Solih expressed the Maldives stands in solidarity with the people of Lebanon following the unspeakable carnage and loss of life caused by the deadly explosion in Beirut.
A massive explosion shook Beirut with a number of people reportedly wounded and widespread damage being caused. The blast at port warehouses storing highly explosive material was the most powerful in years in Beirut, already reeling from an economic crisis and a surge in COVID-19 infections. Over 100 people have been reported killed in the incident and over 4,000 injured.
Officials did not say what caused the blaze that set off the blast. A security source and local media said it was started by welding work being carried out on a hole in the warehouse.
