Schools in the Greater Male’ Region closed for another two weeks

Schools in the Greater Male’ Region have been closed for another two weeks, following a second wave of COVID-19 in the capital.

Schools were originally scheduled to reopen on August 9, at the end of the holidays granted on the joint occasions of Independence Day, Hajj Day and Eid-al Ad’ha. However, the administration has decided to keep schools in the Greater Male’ Region closed until August 19, in order to control the spread of COVID-19 in the capital which has accelerated rapidly over the past few weeks.

Ministry of Education stated lessons will be conducted online during the next two weeks. The ministry added the decision to close schools will be revised at the end of the two-week period, depending on how the COVID-19 situation develops.

On July 1, the administration decided to reopen schools in islands without active COVID-19 cases after keeping it closed for over three months. Students of Grades 9 to 12 in Male' City also commenced studies on July 1 and the administration planned to resume classes for grades 7 to 8 by mid-August. However, the recent few weeks have seen a significant increase of COVID-19 cases in the country.
