Two individuals charged with terrorism for burning police property

Prosecutor General's Office (PGO) has pressed terrorism charges against two individuals involved in burning a speedboat belonging to the Maldives Police Service (MPS).

PGO revealed the charges were pressed at the Criminal Court of the Maldives against Moosa Inas and Abdul Latheef Ibrahim in relation to burning a police speedboat docked at the harbour of Gan, Laamu Atoll on March 22. Inas is accused of committing a direct act of terrorism as specified under the Anti-Terrorism Act, which would lead to a prison sentence between 20 to 25 years if found guilty. Furthermore, Inas and Abdul Latheef are accused of possessing a written document or image promoting a terrorist organisation.

Meanwhile, Gan Magistrate Court on July 6 sentenced Abdul Latheef to one year and 12 days in prison after he admitted to destroying evidence and obstructing justice.

Inas and Abdul Latheef had both previously been implicated in the Sultan Park bombing in 2007. Inas was found guilty of the charges pressed against him, while Abdul Latheef fled the authorities following the incident.
