Parliament reviewing the CED before ratification

Parliamentary Committee on National Security and Foreign Relations has begun reviewing the International Convention for the Protection of All Persons from Enforced Disappearance (CED).

On June 24, President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih decided to ratify the International Convention for the Protection of all Persons from Enforced Disappearance. The president made the decision following consultations with his cabinet before seeking approval from the Parliament of the Maldives. The cabinet expressed ratifying the treaty is indicative of the commitment of the Maldives to upholding human rights in the global arena and within the borders of the country.

The International Convention for the Protection of All Persons from Enforced Disappearances was adopted into international law by the member states of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) on December 20, 2006. The treaty came into effect on December, 23 2010.

The Maldives signed the convention on February 6, 2007. However, the Maldives has not yet ratified the treaty. Of the 98 countries that have signed the treaty, 62 have ratified it thus far.
