2019 was a successful year for Customs: Commissioner General

Commissioner General of Customs Abdulla Shareef has stated 2019 was a successful year for Maldives Customs Service (MCS), in terms of improving the standard and quality of services provided.

In a recorded message released on the occasion of the 130th anniversary of MCS, Commissioner General Shareef highlighted the achievements within the past one year, noting 2019 was a successful year for the institution in raising the standard and quality of service. As such, Shareef noted a global travel assessment system was established to strengthen the security against the smuggling of narcotics, while a system was established to share information with the Interpol. He also highlighted the formulation of a strategic action plan with the goals and objectives set for the next 5 years.

Speaking further, the commissioner general said several efforts were also undertaken last year for the development of human resources within the institution, with special emphasis on professional development and training. He noted an agreement was signed with the government of India on training customs officers, while over 400 staff were given promotions.

The commissioner general also highlighted the rare occurrences of actions which contradict the values and morals upheld by MCS over its long history. Noting MCS will not tolerate actions that violate the moral and ethical principles of the institution, Shareef called on all customs officers and staff to continue serving the nation with honesty and integrity.

The commissioner general also praised the courage and dedication of customs officers in monitoring the gates of the Maldives, amid the COVID-19 pandemic. He noted difficult days may still lie ahead as the country looks to recover from the pandemic, and called on customs officers and staff to remain steadfast in serving the nation.
