Speaker of the Parliament Mohamed Nasheed has stated the two presidential commissions formed to investigate murders and corruption have failed to fulfill its objectives.
Speaking at the parliament sitting on July 14, Speaker Nasheed said the Presidential Commission on Investigating Murders and Enforced Disappearances (DDCom) and the Presidential Commission on Corruption and Asset Recovery have failed to deliver its objectives, despite the legislative changes which were brought under the Presidential Commission Act to grant certain authorities to the commissions. The speaker said he does not see any effective work done by the two commissions, expressing belief it is best to abolish the commissions. He added the commissions are simply an added burden on state expenses, as the commissions serve no purpose.
DDCom had investigated 27 cases relating to unsolved murders and disappearances, which had occurred since 2012. The commission submitted the draft report on the murders of Parliamentarian Dr. Afrasheem Ali, journalist Ahmed Rilwan and blogger Yameen Rasheed, while also forwarding the charges against the perpetrators of the murders. However, the Prosecutor General's Office (PG Office) sent back the charges, claiming the investigations were inadequate.
Meanwhile, the asset recovery commission had prepared an investigation report on the corruption scandal of Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC), through which millions were embezzled from state funds under the disguise of leasing islands for resort development.
Both commissions were formed by President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih on November 17, 2018, the day he assumed office.
