The President's Office has opened applications for the four vacant membership positions at the Civil Service Commission (CSC).
The four positions are vacant after three members of the CSC resigned, while another member was dismissed by the Parliament of the Maldives. The parliament scheduled a vote to dismiss four members of the CSC upon an inquiry by the Parliamentary Committee on Independent Institutions.
The parliament dismissed Ibrahim Shaheeq from the CSC with votes from 48 parliamentarians. President of CSC Aly Shameem and members Shaheed Mohamed and Zakariyya Hussain handed in their resignations before the vote. Fathimath Amira is the only remaining member and is the most recent appointment to the five-member commission.
The parliament has probed into the actions of the members of CSC on multiple occasions over delays in commission proceedings and requested written responses from four members by February 18. The inquiry mainly focused on unfair dismissal of employees, influence peddling in recruiting permanent secretaries, unjust policies in staff recruitment to the commission and personal issues amongst the CSC members.
As part of the inquiry, the committee also met with cabinet ministers to clarify if the actions of the members hindered government proceedings. The ministers noted the actions of the CSC had obstructed many operations within the ministries.
