41 expatriates arrested following confrontations with the police

41 expatriate workers have been arrested following violent confrontations with police officers which occurred during a protest over non-payment of wages.

Maldives Police Service (MPS) revealed officers who arrived at the scene to control the protest were attacked by the expatriates with stones, sand and wood, injuring several officers while also damaging a police vehicle. MPS stated the protest has been brought under control, while 41 expatriates have been arrested following the incident.

The expatriates, who are employees of Island Expert Private Limited, were protesting over non-payment of wages for several months. They had also conducted a protest earlier this month in Hulhumale’, which ended after the company agreed to pay them before July 10.

PSM News understands the expatriates were paid just over USD 100 by Island Expert. However, the workers are demanding the company to pay their due wages.
