Travel ban imposed on dismissed Tourism Minister

Maldives Police Service (MPS) has placed a travel ban on dismissed Minister of Tourism Ali Waheed.

MPS stated a travel ban was placed on the dismissed minister as part of the ongoing investigations on sexual harassment allegations against him. MPS further revealed his passport has been withheld under a court warrant banning him from travelling abroad. As part of the investigations, MPS conducted a search operation at his residence and confiscated some of his electronic items.

On July 8, President Solih ordered Ali Waheed to submit his resignation, after the allegations of sexual harassment were raised by female employees of the Ministry of Tourism. However, as the resignation had not been submitted in time, the president dismissed Ali Waheed from the cabinet on July 9 and appointed Minister of Economic Development Fayyaz Ismail as the acting tourism minister.

Ali Waheed had also come under scrutiny recently after a man in a leaked audio believed to be Ali Waheed made inappropriate comments about other cabinet ministers.
