Ex-President Yameen fails to pay USD 5 million fine by deadline

Former President Abdulla Yameen has failed to pay the fine of USD 5 million which was imposed on him after being found guilty of money laundering.

On November 28, 2019, former President Yameen was sentenced to 5 years in prison and handed a fine of USD 5 million after the Criminal Court of the Maldives found him guilty of laundering USD 1 million through funds embezzled from Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC). The deadline for paying up the fine to Maldives Inland Revenue Authority (MIRA) was set as May 28. However, PSM News understands the fine has not yet been paid.

The former president has appealed his prison sentence at the High Court of the Maldives. He also requested for a court order to release him on bail until the appeal case is concluded at the High Court. However, the request for bail was rejected by the court.
