Parliamentary Committee on Independent Institutions has decided to advise President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih to dismiss 4 members of National Integrity Commission (NIC) for failing to fulfill their responsibilities.
The committee conducted an inquiry into NIC following complaints of failure to investigate cases submitted against law enforcement agencies, as per Clause 6 of the NIC Act. Upon completion of the inquiry, the parliament committee passed the decision to advise the president to dismiss 4 members of NIC, including its President Ahmed Sulaiman, Vice President Hassaan Hameed as well as members Ahmed Ameen and Khadheeja Abdulla. The committee decided not to pursue the dismissal of the latest appointment to NIC, Ahmed Jihad, although he is to be summoned for questioning regarding the work plan of the commission.
NIC is tasked with overseeing the administration of law enforcement agencies, investigating complaints submitted against the agencies and taking relevant action. The authority to appoint and dismiss members of NIC is granted to the president, in accordance to the NIC Act.
