Scheduled flight operations have commenced in the newly developed Maavarulu Airport.
Ministry of Transport and Civil Aviation revealed scheduled flights to Maavarulu Airport will be operated on Thursday and Saturday every week. Scheduled flights to the airport will first be operated by the national flag carrier, Maldivian. A one-way ticket to Maavarulu costs USD 53.67, according to Maldivian.
The government of the Maldives contracted Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) on March 15, 2018 to complete the airport development project in Maavaarulu. The project was completed on June 30 under two phases at a cost of about USD 3.7 million.
Under the first phase, MTCC completed the construction of a 1,200-metre by 30-metre runway, a 60-metre by 15-metre taxiway and a 120-metre by 45-metre apron of the airport. Under the second phase, MTCC completed the construction of a passenger terminal building, a fire building, a staff quarters, a powerhouse, a guard post and a restaurant.
